The Arrival: Pine Cliffs and False Confidence

An Algarve story of sea caves, scooters, dramatic cliffs, and the kind of cocktails that feel fully deserved.

The Arrival: Pine Cliffs and False Confidence

The Arrival: Pine Cliffs and False Confidence

We checked into the lovely Pine Cliffs Resort, which sounds peaceful and serene-and it is-until you realize it sits dramatically on top of cliffs that seem designed by someone who thought, “What if gravity, but make it exciting?”

The plan was simple: beach in the morning, pool in the afternoon, cocktails whenever morally appropriate (so...always).

The execution? Slightly less simple.

The Beaches: A Casual Competition With Heaven

The beaches here are the kind that make you suspicious. Like...how is this real? - Praia de Faro - wide, golden, and perfect for pretending you’re in a travel magazine - Praia de Vale do Lobo - cliffs so dramatic they deserve their own agent - Barrinha Beach - quiet, peaceful, and suspiciously good for napping - Shark Fin Point - exactly what it sounds like, minus the sharks (we checked...briefly)

Our daily routine became: - Morning: Beach goddess phase - Afternoon: Poolside lounging at Pine Cliffs - Evening: “We deserve cocktails after surviving scooters”

Transportation: The Scooter Situation

At some point, we decided to rent scooters. This decision felt empowering for approximately 11 minutes.

Scooters in the Algarve are either: - Thrilling European adventure machines, or - Two-wheeled invitations to reconsider your life choices

Depending on how close you are to a cliff at the time.

We zipped (fine, cautiously wobbled) along coastal roads, heading toward our kayak adventure near Faro, with me mentally drafting my will every time the road curved.

The Caves: Nature Showing Off

First up: the legendary Benagil Cave.

If you’ve ever seen a Windows screensaver and thought, “That looks fake,”-it’s not. It’s just Benagil casually existing.

This isn’t just a cave. It’s a full-blown cathedral of sunlight with a giant skylight (“the eye”) pouring golden light onto the sand like nature is spotlighting itself.

Nearby, Praia da Albandeira quietly flexes with its massive natural rock arch stretching into the sea like it’s auditioning for a fantasy movie.

We also took a speedboat tour, which is basically: “Let’s go very fast past incredibly beautiful caves while trying not to drop our phones into the Atlantic.”

Highly recommend.

The Kayak Adventure: Heroic Until Your Arms Fall Off

Then came the kayaking at Ponta da Piedade-which sounds peaceful until you realize you’re about to paddle into caves like an overconfident explorer.

We launched into calm turquoise water, feeling athletic and outdoorsy.

That feeling lasted until minute six.

The cliffs towered above us-gold, orange, and white layers stacked like a geological lasagna. Our guide casually pointed out formations shaped like animals and faces, while I focused on not paddling in circles like a confused duck.

The real magic? The grottos.

Tiny hidden caves where: - The water glows emerald - The sunlight filters in like a spa commercial - And you briefly forget your arms are now noodles

We paddled through narrow arches and tunnels just wide enough for a kayak, entering secret chambers that felt like nature’s private rooms.

It was breathtaking. Also mildly exhausting. Mostly breathtaking.

Food & Drinks: Our True Athletic Strength

We refueled the only way we know how: aggressively.

Cocktail highlights: - Yolo Lounge - because YOLO, obviously - Boneca Bar - halfway down a cliff, where a bartender casually sabered a bottle of Prosecco like it was Tuesday (it might have been Tuesday) - Mirador Champagne Bar - bubbles with a view - Argo Cocktail Bar - dangerously good drinks

Food worth writing home about (or at least texting about): - Georgina - pizza that made us question all other pizza - O Stop - local, delicious - A random food truck serving oysters and Prosecco-which is the kind of life decision I fully support

Unexpected Entertainment: Wedding Crashers (Sort Of)

One evening, while lounging at the resort, we were treated to live music drifting through the air.

A wedding.

We weren’t invited, but spiritually, we were very involved.

Final Thoughts: Would We Do It Again?

Absolutely.

The Algarve is where: - The cliffs are dramatic - The water is impossibly blue - The caves look photoshopped - And even a simple scooter ride becomes a character-building experience

It’s equal parts relaxation and adventure-with just enough chaos to make it interesting.

And next time?

We might skip the scooters.

...or at least upgrade to something with doors.
